Vasectomy

What are the benefits of a vasectomy?

Next to abstinence, a vasectomy is the most reliable form of male birth control available. Compared with female sterilization methods, such as tubal ligation, vasectomy is a relatively simple and fast surgical procedure.

It’s performed in the office, takes less than 30 minutes to complete, and carries few risks of complications or side effects when performed by a skilled specialist like those at Urology Associates Of Southeastern North Carolina, P.A..

Downtime is minimal following the procedure other than avoiding sexual activity for about a week to give the surgical site time to heal. Strenuous activity is typically restricted for about a week as well, but most men return to light activity within a day or two.

Will a vasectomy affect my sexual performance?

No. A vasectomy won’t affect your sexual performance other than preventing you from fathering a child. In case you’ve heard other rumors, note that a vasectomy:

  • Won’t damage your testicles or penis
  • Isn’t linked to an increased risk of testicular or prostate cancer
  • Doesn’t increase your risk of heart disease
  • Doesn’t cause severe pain

Your doctor at Urology Associates Of Southeastern North Carolina, P.A. always takes time to address any questions or concerns you may have regarding a vasectomy.

What happens during a vasectomy?

Your Urology Associates Of Southeastern North Carolina, P.A. specialist discusses the procedure and recovery time in detail before scheduling your vasectomy.

Generally, however, your doctor first numbs the surgical area with a local anesthetic. Depending on the surgical technique used, your urologist then makes a small incision or a small puncture in the upper scrotum. This allows access to the vas deferens, the small tube that carries mature sperm to the urethra. The vas deferens is clipped and sealed, so it can no longer transport sperm, and repositioned in the scrotum.

The surgical incision or puncture may be closed with a small stitch, sealed with glue, or left to heal on its own. The process is then repeated on the other side. You’re then monitored for a time in the office before being sent home with aftercare instructions.
